Yes, homeschooled and private school students can receive therapy here.

If you homeschool your child or send them to a private school, you might assume speech or occupational therapy is out of reach financially. In many cases, that is not true.

Public dollars for therapy do not disappear when you leave public school. If your child has an active IEP, funding may be available through Ohio scholarship programs. Talk On helps families access those dollars so children can receive the services they need, without paying out of pocket.

How therapy funding works for homeschool and private school students:

  1. Your child has an active IEP and ETR. Your child must have an Evaluation Team Report (ETR) and an Individualized Education Program (IEP) from your public school district of residence.

  2. You choose homeschooling or private school. Even if you opt out of public school, your child can still qualify for certain state scholarship programs based on their IEP.

  3. You complete our intake form and submit required paperwork. This helps us confirm eligibility and gather what is needed for scholarship applications.

  4. Talk On applies for scholarship funding on your behalf. If your child qualifies, we handle the scholarship application process so you do not have to navigate it alone.

  5. Your child receives therapy at Talk On. Once approved, your child can begin speech or occupational therapy using scholarship funding.

What scholarships are available?

Jon Peterson Special Needs (JPSN) Scholarship

The Jon Peterson Special Needs (JPSN) Scholarship Program provides scholarships to students who are eligible to attend kindergarten through 12th grade and have an Individualized Education Program (IEP) from their district. The amount of each scholarship will be based on the primary disability condition identified on the student's Evaluation Team Report (ETR).

Autism Scholarship Program

The Autism Scholarship Program (ASP) gives the parents of children with autism who qualify for a scholarship the choice to send the child to a special education program other than the one operated by the school district of residence to receive their education and the services outlined in the child's Individualized Education Program (IEP) or Autism Education Plan (AEP).

Worried about the cost? Start with a conversation.

Many families assume therapy is not affordable for homeschool or private school students. In reality, funding is often available, but the process is not well explained by school districts. If your child has an IEP, it is worth checking into. A quick conversation can tell you whether scholarships may be an option for your family.
